FODetect^®

is an automated distributed sensor system consisting of SDUs (Surface Detection Units) located along airport travel surfaces for high-resolution and high-speed detection of Foreign Object Debris (FOD).
 

Xsight's FODetect system is a state-of-the-art detection system that is customized to meet each airport's layout and specifications. FODetect offers a multi-sensor deployment which can be integrated into existing runway lighting infrastructure. The surface detection units (SDUs) integrate the Company's proprietary software with leading image processing technology and a short-wave radar sensor.

FODetect, proprietary software and algorithms are specially designed to provide the system outstanding detection performance. FODetect's main processing unit is based on proprietary, specially-designed software and hardware, controls and communications within the SDUs.

The operator's interface is installed as an application on the airport operation control room's computer. FODetect's operator interface allows real time alerts and image analysis, including foreign object location, detection severity analysis and reporting / archiving of FOD incidents.

FODetect® system description

FODetect utilizes an array of foreign object detectors modules named Surface Detection Units (SDUs) that are integrated on the existing aircraft travel surface edge lights, or, in the case of inset lighting, on separate supports away from the runway.
The SDUs are autonomous units which monitor an area of approximately 20.000-40.000 sq. ft  (about 2.000 to 4.000 m2) each, depending on the physical situation.  The SDUs are typically mounted either to part of or to all of the runway and taxiway lights support, depending on airport's layout and the light's position.

The FODetect Process

Scan and Detect Each SDU continuously scans a section of the runway using radar and advanced image processing technologies.
Alert Upon FOD detection, an audio visual alarm is raised at the operator console showing the FOD's location.
Interrogate and classify   An operator views a high resolution images and receives FOD physical data (size, location) supporting a decision to take action.
Remove An operations vehicle is sent to clear the FOD. GPS coordinates and laser assist in efficient removal.
Document and Tag FOD data and actual images are archived and FOD is tagged.
